Access to Dental Care Ensures Kids Can Enjoy Halloween
Routine, preventative treatment keeps kids healthy so they can celebrate
Orange, California (October 31, 2025) - As millions of kids gear up for an evening of Halloween trick-or-treating, this holiday serves as an important reminder of how important regular dental care can be. While you’ll be hard pressed to find a dentist who will endorse buckets of candy, knowing that you can celebrate the season with good oral hygiene should put families at ease.
“It’s unreasonable to expect kids will skip any sweet treats on Halloween, but with proper oral health education and access to dental care, kids can indulge in a way that is safe and that preserves their health,” said Dr. Peter Truong, DDS, Western Dental Chief Dental Officer. “Understanding the importance of flossing and brushing, especially after an evening of sticky treats and lollipops, can help protect a child - or adult’s - teeth.”
Access to dental care must be an option though, for kids and families to have the education needed to preserve their oral health. Regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene information and a keen understanding of the consequences can help families find the right balance.
Earlier this year, the California Legislature and Governor Newsom preserved critical funding that helps ensure families who rely on Medi-Cal for dental care can continue to access to care. Without that funding, millions would lose dental coverage and be at risk for complications that could have been prevented with routine dental care.
“As dentists, our role is to help families understand that preventive care during regular check-ups is one of the most effective ways to maintain good oral health,” added Dr. Truong. “But if a cavity or tooth damage does occur, getting timely treatment is critical to avoid more serious problems down the line. Addressing issues early can prevent infections that might otherwise lead to emergency room visits and longer wait times for everyone.”
As lawmakers consider future funding for Medi-Cal dental, preserving Prop 56 funding should be a priority so that families across California - no matter their dental insurance - can enjoy the days that make childhood so memorable.
